  Through her lattice screen her head looks out, touched by the swallow as it flies, and every evening, like a poet, she sings of the willow and the flower of the peach.

  A une robe rose

  Que tu me plais dans cette robe

  Qui te déshabille si bien,

  Faisant jaillir ta gorge en globe,

  Montrant tout nu ton bras païen!

  Frêle comme une aile d’abeille,

  Frais comme un coeur de rose-thé,

  Son tissu, caresse vermeille,

  Voltige autour de ta beauté.

  De l’épiderme sur la soie

  Glissent des frissons argentés,

  Et l’étoffe à la chair renvoie

  Ses éclairs roses reflétés.

  To a Pink Dress

  How you delight me in that dress that undresses you so well, accentuating your rounded breasts, displaying quite naked your pagan arm!

  As delicate as a bee’s wing, cool as the heart of a tea-rose, its fabric, a rosy caress, flutters around your beauty.

  From the skin to the silk steal silvery quiverings, and the tissue sends back to the flesh its reflected pink flickerings.

  D’où te vient cette robe étrange

  Qui semble faite de ta chair,

  Trame vivante qui mélange

  Avec ta peau son rose clair?

  Est-ce à la rougeur de l’aurore,

  A la coquille de Vénus,

  Au bouton de sein près d’éclore,

  Que sont pris ces tons inconnus?

  Ou bien l’étoffe est-elle teinte

  Dans les roses de ta pudeur?

  Non; vingt fois modelée et peinte,

  Ta forme connaît sa splendeur.

  Jetant le voile qui te pèse,

  Réalité que l’art rêva,

  Comme la princesse Borghèse

  Tu poserais pour Canova.

  Where have you found this strange dress that seems to be made from your flesh, a living web that blends its bright pink with your skin?

  Is it from the dawn’s red blush, from the shell of Venus, from the breast’s nipple about to blossom, that these unknown tints are taken?

  Or else is the fabric dyed in the roses of your modesty? No; twenty times modelled and painted, your figure knows its own magnificence.

  Throwing off the veil that weighs on you, the reality now that art dreamt of, like the Princess Borghese you would pose for Canova.1

  Et ces plis roses sont les lèvres

  De mes désirs inapaisés,

  Mettant au corps dont tu les sèvres

  Une tunique de baisers.

  And these pink folds are the lips of my unsatisfied desires, dressing the body of which you deprive them in a tunic of kisses.

  Symphonie en blanc majeur

  De leur col blanc courbant les lignes

  On voit dans les contes du Nord,

  Sur le vieux Rhin, des femmes-cygnes

  Nager en chantant près du bord;

  Ou, suspendant à quelque branche

  Le plumage qui les revêt,

  Faire luire leur peau plus blanche

  Que la neige de leur duvet.

  Symphony in white major

  Curving the lines of their white necks in tales of the North we see swan-maidens swimming on the old Rhine, singing near the bank.

  Or, hanging on some branch the plumage that clothes them, they display their glossy skin, whiter than the snow of their down.

  De ces femmes il en est une

  Qui chez nous descend quelquefois,

  Blanche comme le clair de lune

  Sur les glaciers dans les cieux froids;

  Conviant la vue enivrée

  De sa boréale fraîcheur

  A des régals de chair nacrúe,

  A des débauches de blancheur!

  Son sein, neige montée en globe,

  Contre les camélias blancs

  Et le blanc satin de sa robe

  Soutient des combats insolents.

  Dans ces grandes batailles blanches,

  Satins et fleurs ont le dessous,

  Et, sans demander leurs revanches,

  Jaunissent comme des jaloux.

  Among these women there is one who comes down to us sometimes, as white as the moonlight on the glaciers in the cold skies;

  Inviting our sense of sight, intoxicated by her boreal coolness, to banquets of pearly flesh, to orgies of whiteness!

  Her breast, snow modelled into a sphere, against the white camellias and the white satin of her gown, keeps up a lively conflict.

  In these great white battles satins and flowers have the worst of it, and, without seeking their revenge, turn yellow as if jealous.

  Sur les blancheurs de son épaule,

  Paros au grain éblouissant,

  Comme dans une nuit du pôle,

  Un givre invisible descend.

  De quel mica de neige vierge,

  De quelle moelle de roseau,

  De quelle hostie et de quel cierge

  A-t-on fait le blanc de sa peau?

  A-t-on pris la goutte lactée

  Tachant l’azur du ciel d’hiver,

  Le lis à la pulpe argentée,

  La blanche écume de la mer;

  Le marbre blanc, chair froide et pâle

  Où vivent les divinités;

  L’argent mat, la laiteuse opale

  Qu’irisent de vagues clartés;

  On the pure white surfaces of her shoulder, Paros marble of dazzling texture, as in a polar night an invisible hoar-frost descends.

  From what mica of virgin snow, from what reed’s pith, from what communion host and what candle was the whiteness of her skin made?

  Was it with the milky drop that stains the blue of the winter sky, the lily with its silvery flesh, the white foam of the sea;

  White marble, cold pale flesh in which the deities live; matt silver, milky opal iridescent with hazy splendours;

  Suspendent leurs baisers tremblants;

  L’hermine vierge de souillure,

  Qui, pour abriter leurs frissons,

  Ouate de sa blanche fourrure

  Les épaules et les blasons;

  Le vif-argent, aux fleurs fantasques

  Dont les vitraux sont ramagés;

  Les blanches dentelles des vasques,

  Pleurs de l’ondine en l’air figés;

  L’aubépine de mai qui plie

  Sous les blancs frimas de ses fleurs;

  L’albâtre où la mélancolie

  Aime à retrouver ses pâleurs;

  Ivory, where her hands have wings, and, like white butterflies, on the tip of the fragile notes hang their quivering kisses;

  Undefiled ermine, which, to protect their shivers, quilts in its white fur shoulders and escutcheons;

  Quicksilver rime with its fantastical flowers that pattern leaded windows; the white lace of fountains, tears of the water-sprite crystallized in the air;

  The May hawthorn which bends beneath the white frosts of its flowers; alabaster where melancholy likes to find its own pallor;

  Le duvet blanc de la colombe,

  Neigeant sur les toits du manoir,

  Et la stalactite qui tombe,

  Larme blanche, de l’antre noir?

  Des Groenlands et des Norvèges

  Vient-elle avec Séraphita?

  Est-ce la Madone des neiges,

  Un sphinx blanc que l’hiver sculpta;

  Sphinx enterré par l’avalanche,

  Gardien des glaciers étoilés,

  Et qui, sous sa poitrine blanche,

  Cache de blancs secrets gelés?

  Sous la glace où calme il repose,

  Oh! qui pourra fondre ce coeur!

  Oh! qui pourra mettre un ton rose

  Dans cette implacable blancheur!

  The
white down of the dove, snowing on the manor’s roofs, and the stalactite, a white tear falling from the cavern’s black vault?

  From Greenlands and Norways does she come with Seraphita? Is she the Madonna of the snows, a white sphinx sculpted by winter;

  A sphinx buried by the avalanche, guardian of the starlit glaciers, who, beneath her white breast, hides white frozen secrets?

  Under the ice where it lies calmly at rest, oh! who can melt this heart! oh! who can touch with a pink tint this unrelenting whiteness!

  L’Art

  Oui, l’oeuvre sort plus belle

  D’une forme au travail

  Rebelle,

  Vers, marbre, onyx, émail.

  Point de contraintes fausses!

  Mais que pour marcher droit

  Tu chausses,

  Muse, un cothurne étroit.

  Fi du rythme commode,

  Comme un soulier trop grand,

  Du mode

  Que tout pied quitte et prend!

  Statuaire, repousse

  L’argile que pétrit

  Le pouce,

  Quand flotte ailleurs l’esprit;

  Art

  Yes, the work emerges more beautiful from a form that resists working, verse, marble, onyx, enamel.

  No false shackles! But to walk straight, Muse, put on a slender cothurnus.1

  Shame on facile rhythm, like an outsize shoe, a mode put on and off by every foot!

  Sculptor, reject clay that yields to the thumb, while the mind drifts elsewhere;

  Lutte avec le carrare,

  Avec le paros dur

  Et rare,

  Gardiens du contour pur;

  Emprunte à Syracuse

  Son bronze où fermement

  S’accuse

  Le trait fier et charmant;

  D’une main délicate

  Poursuis dans un filon

  D’agate

  Le profil d’Apollon.

  Peintre, fuis l’aquarelle

  Et fixe la couleur

  Trop frêle

  Au four de l’émailleur.

  Fais les Sirènes bleues,

  Tordant de cent façons

  Leurs queues,

  Les monstres des blasons;

  Struggle with Carrara, with the hard rare marble of Paros, guardians of the pure outline;

  Borrow from Syracuse its bronze in which the proud bewitching feature is firmly accentuated;

  With a delicate hand seek out in a vein of agate the profile of Apollo.

  Painter, shun the water-colour, and in the enameller’s oven set firm the colour that is too frail.

  Form blue sirens, writhing their tails in a hundred ways, the monsters of heraldic arms;

  Dans son nimbe trilobe

  La Vierge et son Jésus,

  Le globe

  Avec la croix dessus.

  Tout passe. – L’art robuste

  Seul a l’éternité;

  Le buste

  Survit à la cité.

  Et la médaille austère

  Que trouve un laboureur

  Sous terre

  Révèle un empereur.

  Les dieux eux-mêmes meurent,

  Mais les vers souverains

  Demeurent

  Plus forts que les airains.

  In her triple halo the Virgin and her Jesus, the globe with the cross above it.

  Everything passes. – Only vigorous art is eternal; the bust outlives the city.

  And the austere medallion found by a ploughman beneath the earth reveals an emperor.

  The gods themselves die. But sovereign lines of verse remain stronger than bronzes.

  Sculpte, lime, cisèle;

  Que ton rêve flottant

  Se scelle

  Dans le bloc résistant!

  Carve, file, chisel; let your irresolute dream be sealed in the unyielding block!

  Théodore de Banville

  (1823–91)

  De Banville tends to be viewed as an influence, as a signpost to Parnassianism and eventually to Symbolism, rather than as a talented poet in his own right. That judgement perhaps does less than justice to his lyricism, his humour, his imagination, and his linguistic and technical virtuosity. His qualities were acknowledged in his time by Baudelaire and Mallarmé; and this dedicated craftsman certainly forms an important bridge between on the one hand Romanticism and the pre-classical verse tradition (the ballad, the ode, the rondeau), and on the other the new mid-nineteenth-century urge towards a sublime aesthetic ideal, purified of vulgarity and embodied in a more supple but still classically inspired verse line. He published an influential Petit Traité de Poésie française in 1872.

  Among his numerous volumes, perhaps the best are: Stalactites 1846, Les Odelettes 1856, Odes funambulesques 1857, Les Améthystes 1862, Les Exilés 1867.

  We’ll go no more to the wood…

  We’ll go no more to the wood, the laurels are cut down. The Cupids amid the pools, the cluster of Naiads see, fragmented into crystals and shining in the sun, the silent waters that flowed from their cup. The laurels are cut down, and the stag at bay shudders at the sound of the horn; we’ll go no more to the wood, where the wild troupe of bewitching children laughed under the gaze of the lilies moistened by the tears of heaven, here is the grass they are scything and the laurels they are chopping. We’ll go no more to the wood, the laurels are cut down.

  Un marbre sans défaut pour en faire un beau vase;

  Ni de Cypris naissant sur la mer embaumée;

  Pas de Titans vaincus dans leurs rébellions,

  Ni de riant Bacchos attelant les lions

  Avec un frein tressé de pampres et de vignes;

  Sculptor, seek with care…

  Sculptor, seek with care, while awaiting inspiration, a flawless marble with which to make a lovely vase; seek for long hours its form and engrave in it no mysterious loves nor divine combats. No Heracles victorious over the monster of Nemea, nor birth of Cypris1 on the scented sea; no Titans vanquished in their revolts, nor laughing Bacchus harnessing the lions with a bridle plaited with vine branches and stems; no Leda playing amid the flock of swans in the shade of the flowering laurels, nor Artemis surprised in the lap of the waters in her lily whiteness. Around the pure vase, too lovely for the priestess of Bacchus, let the vervain blossom as it mingles with acanthus leaves, and lower down let maidens advance slowly two by two, their step firm and charming, their arms dangling along their straight tunics and their hair plaited on their slender heads.

  The Springboard Leap

  Admirable clown, truly! I believe posterity, with its incessantly shifting horizon, will see him again, with his wounded flank, he was daubed in white, yellow, green and red.

  Even to Madagascar his name had spread, for it was according to all the rules that after the paper hoops, never distorting them, he would spring through the smoke-rings.

  De la pesanteur affranchi,

  Sans y voir clair il eÛt franchi

  Les escaliers de Piranèse.

  La lumière qui le frappait

  Faisait resplendir son toupet

  Comme un brasier dans la fournaise.

  Il s’élevait à des hauteurs

  Telles, que les autres sauteurs

  Se consumaient en luttes vaines.

  Ils le trouvaient décourageant,

  Et murmuraient: “Quel vif-argent

  Ce démon a-t-il dans les veines?”

  Tout le peuple criait: “Bravo!”

  Mais lui, par un effort nouveau,
