  Souvenir

  S’éteignit tout à coup dans un mot commencé;

  Quand ses yeux, soulevant leur paupière brÛlante,

  Me blessèrent d’un mal dont je le crus blessé;

  Memory

  When he grew pale one evening, and his trembling voice died suddenly on a half-formed word; when his eyes, raising their burning lids, pierced me with a wound with which I thought him pierced; when his more touching features, illumined with a fire that never dies, made their living imprint in the depth of my soul, he did not love, I loved!

  Les Roses de Saadi

  J’ai voulu ce matin te rapporter des roses;

  The Roses of Saadi1

  I wanted to bring you roses this morning; but I had gathered so many in my tightly fastened sashes that the overstrained knots could not contain them.

  Elles ont suivi l’eau pour ne plus revenir;

  The knots burst open. The roses, borne on the wind, all flew away to the sea. They followed the water, never to return;

  The waves seemed red with them, as if on fire. Tonight, my gown is still filled with their scent… Breathe on me their fragrant memory.

  La Couronne effeuillée

  J’irai, j’irai porter ma couronne effeuillée

  Au jardin de mon père où revit toute fleur;

  The Wreath stripped of petals

  I will go, I will carry my wreath stripped of petals to my father’s garden where all flowers live again; there on my knees I will pour out my soul’s long confession: my father has secrets that triumph over grief.

Il me regardera

  Chère âme, je suis Dieu: ne soyez plus troublée;

  Voici votre maison, voici mon coeur, entrez!”

  I will go, I will say to him, at least with my tears: ‘Look, I have suffered…’ He will look at me and beneath the changes wrought in me by time, beneath my unenchanting pallor, because he is my father he will recognize me.

  He will say: ‘So it is you, dear grieving soul! Does earth not support your erring steps? Dear soul, I am God: be no longer troubled; here is your home, here is my heart, come in!’

  O mercy! O sweetness! O holy refuge! O Father! You have heard your weeping child! Already I secure you because I hope for you and because you possess all that I have lost.

  You do not reject the flower whose beauty has faded, that earthly crime is forgiven in heaven. You will not curse your faithless child, not for having sold anything, but for having given all.

  Alfred de Vigny

  (1797–1863)

  Vigny was born into an aristocratic and military family with a strong and increasingly inappropriate sense of rank, duty, honour and tradition. He served as an army officer in the post-Napoleonic period.

  He nursed an invalid wife for thirty years, but also had a passionate, difficult and destructive affair with the actress Marie Dorval. An introspective and depressive character, with a sense of persecution both individual and cosmic, he nevertheless cultivated a stoical endurance of his personal and intellectual torments, transmuting emotion into thought and avoiding the cloying self-pity of some of his contemporaries.

  Much of his best work is on Biblical themes. He projects his own doubts and sufferings on to grandiose figures whose vision, strength and pain give them a special relationship with God, but also mark them out for isolation and betrayal.

  His style can be stiff, even pompous; but at its finest his verse has a monumental quality, and he shares to an extent Hugo’s gift for the vivid visual communication of place, time, character and drama. A genuine religious and emotional anguish can still move us, despite the rhetoric and the absence of lyrical intimacy in his verse.

  In later life Vigny developed a more optimistic confidence in human progress through the activity of ‘L’Esprit pur’ – the human spirit, purified of material concerns and vested in an élite of philosophers and poets. He saw poetry as the supreme embodiment and expression of thought, as an austere and noble assertion of human dignity against the world and against death.

  Le lin blanc de la tente est bercé mollement;

  L’oeuf d’autruche allumé veille paisiblement,

  The Wrath of Samson

  The desert is silent, the tent is solitary. What brave shepherd placed it on the land of sand and lions? Night has not calmed the furnace of the day, its air is still fiery. A gentle wind rises on the horizon and ripples the ocean of dust like a limpid lake. The white linen of the tent rocks softly; the lighted ostrich egg keeps peaceful watch, inner star of the veiled travellers, and throws two elongated shadows on the cloth.

  One
is great and proud, the other is at his feet: it is the slave Delilah, and her arms enlace the knees of her grave young master whose divine strength obeys the slave. Like a gentle leopard she is lithe, and spreads her loosened hair over the feet of her lover. Her large eyes, half-open as an almond opens, are burning with the pleasure that her gaze seeks and flash as they cast their restless gleam. Her delicate arms, moist with warm sweat, her voluptuous feet crossed beneath her, her flanks more slender than a gazelle’s, all hung with bracelets, rings and golden buckles, are brown, and, as befits the daughters of Hatsor, both her breasts, laden with ancient amulets, are chastely held in Syrian cloths.

  Samson’s knees are strongly pressed together like the knees of the colossus Anubis. She slumbers, powerless and laughing and cradled by the powerful hand beneath her head. He murmurs in his throat this sombre and sorrowful song with its Hebrew words. She does not understand the foreign tongue, but the song pours sleep into her capricious1 head.

  ‘An eternal struggle in every time and place is waged on earth, in the presence of God, between Man’s goodness and the guile of Woman, for woman is a being impure in body and soul.

  Man always needs caresses and love, his mother quenches his thirst for them when he comes to the light of day, and this arm is the first to benumb him, to rock him and give him a desire for love and languor. Anxious in his actions, anxious in his plans, he will dream wherever he goes of the warmth of the breast, of the songs of night and the kisses of dawn, of the fiery lips consumed by his lips, of the loosened hair cascading over his brow, and, as he goes, yearnings for the bed will follow him. He will go to the town, and there the foolish virgins will take him in their snares with the first words. The stronger he is born, the more readily he will be conquered, for the greater the river, the more turbulent it is. When the battle which God made for his creature both against his fellow and against Nature forces Man to seek a breast on which to rest, when his eyes are weeping, he needs a kiss, but he has not yet fulfilled his task: there comes another conflict, more secret treacherous and cowardly; in his arms, on his heart this one is waged; and, more or less, the Woman is always DELILAH.

  Vient un autre combat plus secret, traître et lâche;

  Sous son bras, sur son coeur se livre celui-là;

  Elle se fait aimer sans aimer elle-même;

  Un maître lui fait peur. C’est le plaisir qu’elle aime;

  She laughs and triumphs; in her knowing coldness, among her sisters she waits and boasts of feeling nothing of the fire’s pangs. To her fairest friend she has confessed it: she inspires love without herself loving. A master frightens her. It is pleasure that she loves; Man is rough and takes it without knowing how to give it. An illustrious sacrifice, done to astonish, enhances more than gold, in the eyes of her equals, the beauty that engenders so many strange marvels and knows how to sprinkle its steps with precious blood.

  OÛ, voyant les humains, Dieu dit: “Je me repens!”

  Bientôt, se retirant dans un hideux royaume,

  La Femme aura Gomorrhe et l’Homme aura Sodome;

  – So what I have wished for, Lord, does not exist! – she to whom love goes and from whom life comes, she, through pride, makes herself our enemy. Woman is worse now than in those times when God, seeing mankind, said: “I repent!” Soon, withdrawing into a hideous kingdom, Woman will have Gomorrha and Man will have Sodom; and casting from a distance a gaze of mutual anger, the two sexes will die, each on its own side.

  Qui n’ont pu me cacher la rage de ses yeux;

  De se voir découverte ensemble et pardonnée;

  Eternal! God of the strong! you know that my soul had no food but the love of a woman, drawing from love alone more holy strength than my divine hair gave to my heart. – Judge us. – There she is asleep at my feet. Three times she has sold my secrets and my life, and three times shed false tears which could not hide from me the fury in her eyes; ashamed as she was, even more than astonished, to see herself both discovered and forgiven; for Man’s goodness is strong, and his gentleness crushes, by absolving it, the weak and deceitful creature.

  But at long last I am weary. My soul is so heavy that my giant body and my powerful head which hold up the weight of columns of bronze cannot carry it with all its sorrow. Always to see the gilded viper slithering in its filth and thinking itself unseen! Always this companion whose heart is untrustworthy, Woman, a sick and twelve times impure child! Always to spend one’s strength in keeping anger within the offended heart, as in a sanctuary; if the fire escaped from there it would consume everything; to forbid one’s eyes to see or weep, it is too much! God, if he wishes, can sweep away my ashes. I have given my secret, Delilah will sell it. How beautiful will be the feet of the one who comes to announce my death to me! – What will be, will be.’
