Intoxicated, he is alive, forgetting the horror of the holy oils, the infusions, the clock and the confinement to bed, the cough; and when evening bleeds among the tiles, his eye, on the horizon gorged with light,

Sees golden galleys, beautiful as swans, sleeping on a river of purple and perfumes cradling the rich and tawny brilliance of their form in a great warm indolence heavy with memory!

Thus, seized with loathing for man with his hardened soul wallowing in contentment where his appetites alone eat, and who persistently seeks that filth to offer it to the woman giving milk to her children,

I escape and cling to all the windows from which one turns one’s shoulder on life, and, blessed, in their glass, cleansed by eternal dews, gilded by the chaste morning of the Infinite

Je me mire et me vois ange! et je meurs, et j’aime

I see myself mirrored and see myself angel! and I am dying, and I love – let the glass pane be art, and be mysticism – to be reborn, bearing my dream as a diadem, in that antecedent heaven where Beauty flourishes!

But alas! the here-below is master: its haunting presence comes to nauseate me sometimes even in this safe refuge, and the tainted vomit of Stupidity makes me hold my nose in the face of the azure.

Is there a way, O Self familiar with bitterness, of breaking through the crystal insulted by the monstrous and escaping with my two featherless wings – at the risk of falling for all eternity?

  Brise marine

  Sea Wind

The flesh is sad, alas! and I’ve read all the books. To escape! escape out there! I sense that birds are drunk to be amidst the unknown foam and the skies! Nothing, not old gardens reflected in eyes will hold back this heart which immerses itself in the sea O nights! nor the desolate brightness of my lamp on the empty paper defended by its whiteness nor even the young wife with her child at the breast. I will leave! Steamer swaying your masts, hoist anchor for exotic climes!

A Tedium, ravaged by cruel hopes, still believes in the supreme farewell of handkerchiefs! And, perhaps, the masts, inviting storms, are of the kind that a wind tilts over shipwrecks lost without masts, without masts or fertile isles… But, O my heart, hear the sailors’ song!

  The Afternoon of a Faun

  Eclogue

  THE FAUN

I want to perpetuate these nymphs.

So bright, their light incarnadine, that it flutters in the air drowsy with tufted slumbers.

Did I love a dream? My doubt, accumulation of old darkness, ends in many a tenuous bough which, remaining the true woods themselves, proves, alas! that I offered myself alone for triumph the ideal sin of roses. Let us reflect…

Or suppose the women that you expound represent a desire of your fable-rich senses! Faun, illusion escapes like a weeping spring from the blue and cold eyes of the most chaste: but the other, all sighs, do you say she contrasts like a day breeze warm in your fleece! No! through the motionless and torpid swoon suffocating the cool morning with heat if it struggles, there murmurs no water but that poured by my flute on the grove sprinkled with chords; and the only wind quick to exhale itself from the two pipes before it disperses the sound in an arid rain, is, on the horizon unstirred by any wrinkle, the visible, serene and artificial breath of inspiration, returning to the sky.

O Sicilian shores of a calm marsh that my vanity plunders, rivalling suns, tacit beneath the flowers of the sparks, TELL ‘That I was cutting here the hollow reeds tamed by talent; when, on the glaucous gold of distan
t verdures inscribing their vine on springs, an animal whiteness undulates to rest: and that at the slow prelude in which the pipes are born this flight of swans, no! of naiads flees or dives…’

Inert, all burns in the tawny hour without showing by what art ran off together an excess of hymen desired by him who seeks the A-note: then I shall awaken to the primary fervour, erect and alone, under an ancient flood of light, lilies! and one of you all in ingenuousness.

  Mystérieuse, due à quelque auguste dent;

  Fausses entre elle-même et notre chant crédule;

Other than this sweet nothing rumoured by their lip, the kiss, which quietly gives assurance of the treacherous, my breast, virgin of proof, bears witness to a mysterious bite, due to some august tooth; but enough of that! such a mystery chose for confidant the immense twin reed on which we play beneath the azure: which, turning to itself the cheek’s emotion, dreams in a long solo that we were entertaining the beauty around us by false confusions between itself and our credulous song; and, as high as love can be modulated, of making vanish, from the ordinary dream of back or pure flank followed through my closed eyes, a resonant, vain and monotonous line.

Try then, instrument of escapes, O wicked Syrinx, to flower once more on the lakes where you await me. I, proud of my murmur, shall speak at length of the goddesses; and by idolatrous paintings from their shadow lift still more girdles: thus, when I have sucked the grapes’ brightness to banish a regret moved aside by my pretence, laughing, I raise the empty cluster to the summer sky and, blowing in its luminous skins, greedy for drunkenness, until evening I gaze through it.

  Avec un cri de rage au ciel de la forêt;

  J’accours; quand, à mes pieds, s’entrejoignent (meurtries

  Des dormeuses parmi leurs seuls bras hasardeux;

O nymphs, let us inflate once more some diverse MEMORIES. ‘My eye, piercing the reeds, darted on each immortal neck, that drowns its burning in the waters with a cry of rage to the forest sky; and the splendid bath of hair disappears in the pools of light and in the quiverings, O precious stones! I come running; when, at my feet, are clasped together (bruised by the languor tasted in this evil of being two) sleeping women amid their mere, daring arms; I carry them off, without disentangling them, and fly to this thicket, shunned by the frivolous shade, of roses drying up every perfume in the sunlight, where may our sport be like the consumed day.’ I adore you, wrath of virgins, O wild and timorous delight of the holy naked burden which slides away to escape my burning lip drinking, as lightning quivers! the secret terror of the flesh: from the feet of the heartless one to the heart of the timid one, abandoned at the same time by an innocence wet with wild tears or less sad vapours. ‘My crime is to have divided, happy at the conquest of these treacherous fears, the dishevelled tuft of kisses that the gods kept so well mingled: for scarcely was I going to hide a passionate laugh under the blissful coils of one alone (holding by a mere finger, so that her feather-like innocence might be tinted by her sister’s emotion taking fire, the little one, naive, not blushing:) when from my arms, loosened by vague deaths, that ever ungrateful prey frees herself with no pity for the sob with which I was still drunk.’

No matter! towards happiness others will pull me by their tresses knotted to the horns on my brow: you know, my passion, that, purple and ripe already, every pomegranate bursts and murmurs with bees; and our blood, in love with whoever will seize it, flows for all the eternal swarm of desire. At the hour when this wood is tinted with gold and ashes, a festival flares up in the darkened foliage: Etna! it is upon you visited by Venus placing her ingenuous heels upon your lava, when a sad slumber thunders or the flame exhausts itself. I hold the queen!

  Chaque grenade éclate et d’abeilles murmure;

  O certain punishment…

No, but the soul empty of words and this weighted body succumb late to the proud silence of noon: with no more ado we must sleep in forgetfulness of blasphemy, lying on the thirsty sand and how I love to open my mouth to the wine-
making star!

Couple, farewell: I’m going to see the shadow you became.

  Sainte

  A la fenêtre recelant

Le santal vieux qui se dédore

  De sa viole étincelant

  Jadis avec flÛte ou mandore,

  Est la Sainte pâle, ètalant

Le livre vieux qui se déplie

  Du Magnificat ruisselant

  Jadis selon vêpre et complie:

  A ce vitrage d’ostensoir

Que frôle une harpe par l’Ange

Formée avec son vol du soir

  Pour la délicate phalange

Du doigt que, sans le vieux santal

Ni le vieux livre, elle balance

  Sur le plumage instrumental,

  Musicienne du silence.

  Saint

In the window concealing the old sandalwood that is losing its gilt of her viol once sparkling with flute or mandola,

Is the pale saint; she displays the old unfolding book of the Magnificat flowing in ages past according to vespers and compline:

Within this monstrance glass brushed by a harp formed by the Angel with his evening flight for the delicate tip

Of the finger which, without the old sandalwood or the old book, she holds poised on the instrumental plumage, musician of silence.

  Petit Air I

  Quelconque une solitude

Sans le cygne ni le quai

  Mire sa désuétude

  Au regard que j’abdiquai

  Ici de la gloriole

Haute à ne la pas toucher

  Dont maint ciel se bariole

  Avec les ors de coucher

  Mais langoureusement longe

  Comme de blanc linge ôté

  Tel fugace oiseau si plonge

  Exultatrice à côté

  Dans l’onde toi devenue

  Ta jubilation nue.
