  Little Melody I

Some commonplace solitude without swan or quay reflects its desuetude in the gaze which I withdrew

Down here from the vainglory too high to touch in which many a sky paints itself gaudy with the golds of sunset

But languorously moves along like white linen discarded some fleeting bird if exultant alongside your naked jubilation

Plunges into the waters become you.

  When the Shadow threatened…

When the shadow threatened with the fatal law a certain old Dream, desire and suffering of my vertebrae, grieved at dying beneath the funereal ceilings it folded its unquestionable wing within me.

Funeral splendour, O ebony hall where, to seduce a king renowned garlands writhe in their death, you are only a pride denied by the shadows in the eyes of the hermit dazzled by his faith.

Yes, I know that far off in this night, the Earth radiates the singular mystery of a great burst of light, beneath the hideous centuries that obscure it less.

Space like unto itself whether it grows or denies itself revolves in this tedium vile fires for witnesses that the genius of a festive star has been ignited.

The Virgin, the vigorous and the beauteous today…

The virgin, the vigorous and the beauteous today, will it cleave for us with an intoxicated wing-beat this hard forgotten lake haunted beneath the frost by the transparent glacier of flights that have not taken flight!

A swan of time past remembers that it is he, magnificent but who without hope frees himself for not having sung of the region where life is when sterile winter’s tedium shone.

His whole neck will shake off this white agony inflicted by space on the bird which denies it, but not the horror of the ground where the plumage is caught.

A phantom appointed to this place by his pure brilliance, he becomes motionless in the cold dream of contempt worn in purposeless exile by the Swan.

  Autre éventail

  de Mademoiselle Mallamé

O rêveuse, pour que je plonge

  Au pur délice sans chemin,

  Sache, par un subtil mensonge,

Garder mon aile dans ta main.

  Une fraîcheur de crépuscule

  Te vient à chaque battement

  Dont le coup prisonnier recule

  L’horizon délicatement.

  Vertige! voici que frissonne

  L’espace comme un grand baiser

Qui, fou de naître pour personne,

  Ne peut jaillir ni s’apaiser.

  Another Fan

  of Mademoiselle Mallarmé

O dreaming girl, that I may plunge into pure pathless delight, be skilful in keeping, through a subtle lie, my wing in your hand.

A twilight freshness comes to you at every beat whose imprisoned movement wafts back the horizon delicately.

Vertigo! and now space shivers like a great kiss which, frantic at being born for no one, can neither surge up nor subside.

Do you sense the innocently wild paradise like a buried laugh gliding from the corner of your mouth deep into the unanimous fold!

The sceptre of pink lagoon shores over golden evenings, this it is, this closed white flight which you place against a bracelet’s fire.

  The Tomb of Edgar Poe

Such as into Himself at last eternity changes him, the Poet arouses with a naked sword his century terrified at not having recognized that death triumphed in that strange voice!

They, like the vile convulsion of a hydra hearing in olden days the angel give a purer sense to the words of the tribe, proclaimed aloud the spell drunk in the flow without honour of some black mixture.

Out of the hostile soil and cloud, O grievance! if with them our idea carve no bas-relief to adorn the dazzling tomb of Poe,

Calm block fallen here below from a mysterious disaster, may this granite at least present for ever its frontier to the black flights of Blasphemy scattered in the future.

  Her pure nails…

Her pure nails raised high dedicating their onyx, Anguish, this midnight, sustains, torch-bearing, many an evening dream burned by the Phoenix that no cinerary amphora gathers.

On the sideboards, in the empty parlour: no ptyx, abolished trinket of sonorous vacuity (for the Master has gone to draw tears from the Styx with this sole object with which the Void honours itself).

But near the empty north window, a golden light is dying in accordance perhaps with the scene of unicorns lashing fire against a water nymph,

She, dead and naked in the mirror, and yet in the oblivion enclosed by the frame, is fixed instantaneously the septet of scintillations.

  The Demon of Analogy

Did unknown words sing upon your lips, accursed shreds of an absurd sentence?

I left my apartment with the clear sensation of a wing gliding over the strings of an instrument, lingering and light, replaced by a voice uttering with a falling intonation the words: ‘The Penultimate is dead’, in such a way that The Penultimate ended the line and Is dead stood out from the fateful suspension more uselessly within the void of meaning. I took some steps in the street and recognized in the nul sound the taut string of the musical instrument, which was forgotten and which glorious Memory had certainly just visited with its wing or with a palm and, with my finger on the contrivance of the mystery, I smiled and with intellectual desires begged for a different subject for conjecture.

from a previous fall of feather or twig, heard henceforward through the voice, until at last it articulated itself all alone, living and with its personality. I walked on (no longer content with a perception) reading it as a line-ending, and, once, as a test, adapting it to my speech; soon uttering it with a silence after ‘Penultimate’ in which I found a laboured pleasure: ‘The Penultimate’ then the string of the instrument, so taut in forgetfulness on the nul sound, no doubt snapped and I added as a kind of prayer: ‘Is dead’. I did not cease my attempt to return to preferred thoughts, asserting, to calm myself, that, surely, penultimate is the lexical term that signifies the last syllable but one of the vocables, and its appearance is the imperfectly renounced remnant of a labour of linguistics; my quotidiennement sanglote de s’interrompre ma noble faculté poétique: la sonorité même et l’air de mensonge assumé par la hâte de la facile affirmation étaient une cause de tourment.

noble poetic faculty sobs daily as it is interrupted by this: the very sonority and the air of falsehood assumed by the eagerness of facile assertion were a cause of torment. Harassed, I resolved to let the sad-natured words themselves wander over my mouth, and I walked on murmuring with an intonation potentially of sympathy: ‘The Penultimate is dead, she is dead, quite dead, the despairing Penultimate’, thinking thereby that I would answer my anxiety, and not without the secret hope of burying it in the swelling of the chant when, terror! – by a readily deducible and nervous magic – I sensed that I had, as my hand reflected by a shop window made the gesture of a downward caress on something, the voice itself (the first, which beyond doubt had been the only one).

But when the unimpeachable intervention of the supernatural takes its place, and the beginning of the anguish beneath which my once lordly spirit lies in its agony, that is when I saw, raising my eyes, in the street of antique dealers which I had instinctively followed, that I was in front of a lute-maker’s shop selling old instruments that hung on the wall, and, on the ground, yellow palms and, hidden in the shadow, the wings of ancient birds. I fled, freakish, an individual probably condemned to wear mourning for the inexplicable Penultimate.

  Charles Cros

  (1842–88)

Charles Cros was a brilliant scientist and inventor as well as poet, a pioneering researcher in electricity, colour photography, acoustics and telegraphy, and even envisaged interplanetary communication. But he was no ‘boffin’, preferring the bohemian existence of the Parisian artistic world, his friendships with Nouveau, Mendés and Huysmans, and the ‘green enlightenment’ of absinth.

Rather overshadowed in his own time by Baudelaire, Verlaine, Rimbaud and Mallarmé, Cros has been acknowledged more recently as a significant poet, whose rather fin-de-siècle blend of emotion and self-mocking, suspicious irony prefigures Corbière and especially Laforgue, who recognized the influence.

Passionate and analytical, self-dramatizing and sardonic, this philologist has a taste for crisp, laconic, unpretentious lines of verse where lyricism interacts with wit. He experiments with a wide range of metres and stanza forms, and is adept at coining original and delightful combinations of noun and adjective, often drawing together the naïve and the refined. His sound associations and rhythmic control show a dynamic mastery of technique that parallels a tight intellectual mastery of his feelings, leaving us often with a mixed sense of exhilaration and anti-climax.

Major works: Le Coffret de santal 1873, Le Collier de griffes (posthumous)

  Lendemain

  À Henri Mercier

Avec les fleurs, avec les femmes,

  Avec l’absinthe, avec le feu,

On peut se divertir un peu,

Jouer son rôle en quelque drame.

  L’absinthe bue un soir d’hiver

  Éclaire en vert l’âme enfumée,

Et les fleurs, sur la bien-aimée

  Embaument devant le feu clair.

Puis les baisers perdent leurs charmes,

  Ayant duré quelque
s saisons.

  Morrow

  for Henri Mercier

With flowers, with women, with absinth, with fire, one can have a little entertainment, play one’s role in some drama.

Absinth drunk on a winter evening enlightens in green the smoky soul, and flowers on the loved one give off scents before the shining fire.

Then kisses lose their charms, having lasted a few seasons. Mutual betrayals one day bring separation, without tears.

  On brÛle lettres et bouquets

Et le feu se met à l’alcôve,

Et, si la triste vie est sauve,

  Restent l’absinthe et ses hoquets.

  Les portraits sont mangés des flammes;

  Les doigts crispés sont tremblotants…

  On meurt d’avoir dormi longtemps

Avec les fleurs, avec les femmes.

Letters and bouquets are burned and fire sets the bedchamber ablaze, and, if melancholy life is spared, absinth and its hiccoughs remain.

Portraits are consumed by flames; taut fingers are quivering… one dies of having slept too long with flowers and with women.
